A Mother's Cookies Haiku Tribute

Mother's Cookies in Oakland, California has closed its doors after 92 years. I am mourning the loss of English Tea cookies, Iced Oatmeal cookies, the ever favorite Cookie Parade with Frosted Circus Animals, just to name a few. I loved these cookies growing up. In tribute, I am writing three haiku poems to express my cookie love.

Circus Animals

Tigers, elephants
sprinkled frosting, pink and white
childhood memory now

Iced Oatmeal

Which package on shelf
has the most frosting of all?
I guess as I choose.

English Tea

Hearty cookie stack
filled with rich, creamy frosting
Who needs a teacup?

Mother's closing is truly depressing. I first discovered these wonders when I came from the East Coast to college in southern California in 1976, at age 16. There has never been a company with a cookie variety like Mother's. They will truly be missed.

You hit some of the highlights. The oatmeal raisin and vanilla tea were favorites for me. Ditto the taffy cookies.

Great haiku!

say it isn't so? omg, i am going to have to clear out the shelves of those animal cookies. i LOVE those and never buy them because they are awful for us!

and L, i can't believe you said you feel like you don't have a given talent, too. ummm....you are extremely smart and could quit your job to be a professional baker if you wanted!

I had no idea they had closed. This is incredibly traumatic for me. You mean I won't be able to instruct my unborn child on the proper way to eat a frosted animal cookie? (Head First, always, it's the most humane) I have such a hard time believing they didn't make money - we always used their cookies, at home, for parties. Something seems off.

I heard about the Mother's cookies closure on NPR last week and hadn't even really processed it yet. The english tea cookies always make me think of you, Lauren, because we used to always get them when we lived together. I'll also miss the double fudge cookies (the ones that looked like english tea but were made of chocolate). :(
